‘Corpse Bride’ Cosplayer Carson Dye Plays Dead [Video / Photo Gallery]

The biggest event of its kind in the region, Tidewater Comicon returned to Virginia Beach May 12-13, bringing with it many of the iconic creators, writers, and artists of your favorite comic book heroes and villains, along with actors from various genre films and TV shows, uniquely talented vendors, and amazing cosplayers, including Carson Dye, who showed off her stunning Corpse Bride cosplay.

Tidewater Comicon 2018 took over the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, VA for two days on Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, and Halloween Daily News was on the scene again this year to bring you full coverage, including photos, videos, and interviews.

A Virginia Beach local and an avid cosplayer of all genres, we caught up with Carson Dye for a few minutes to discuss how she brought her statuesque interpretation of “Emily” from Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride to life.

“The corset took about four or five months on its own, because I had to bone it all and do all the grommeting and stuff,” said Carson. “And then the train and the skirt surprisingly didn’t take too long, …maybe three weeks at max. The veil was super easy, just hot gluing some stuff to a headband. And then I made my little wormy maggot guy out of pony beads and clay and pipe cleaner. I already had this (bouquet) from my brother’s wedding. I just spray painted it blue.”

With her entire upper body covered in striking blue body paint, Dye’s finishing touch for her Corpse Bride was just a taste of blood in her exposed ribs, a visual variation of what is seen in the 2005 stop-motion classic.

“The body paint took three hours,” said Carson. “I decided to make it a little bit more gory. It’s just exposed bone in the movie, but I made it a little bit more gory. And I made it with hot glue. I’ve seen a lot of Emily cosplayers just take plastic ribs off a skeleton, and I didn’t like that. So I decided to do the hot glue route and make it look a little bloody, a little gory. And that’s what I did with the arm (exposed bone) too.”
