Here’s Who’s Making the Michael Myers Mask for ‘Halloween’ 2018

Now that the cast is taking shape and filming of the new Halloween movie, executive produced by John Carpenter and arriving in theaters in October 2018, is set to begin in about two weeks, we can also confirm the award-winning team that will be making the new mask for Michael Myers, and I think it’s safe to say that this all-important task is in some good, talented hands.

The makeup department for Halloween 2018 is being headed up by Christopher Nelson, whose team won an Academy Award for 2016’s Suicide Squad, where he was specifically responsible for the makeup of Killer Croc, while overseeing all of that film’s extensive special fx work.

Nelson has also won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Makeup and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for his work on American Horror Story in 2015, and received prior Emmy nominations for American Horror Story in 2013 and 2014, The Cape in 2011, and Nip/Tuck in 2007. His long list of credits also includes Deadpool, Sin City, Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2, Netflix’s just released Bright, and next year’s Avengers: Infinity War, among many others.

Nelson’s fx makeup co-designer for Halloween 2018 is Vincent Van Dyke, who is a four-time Emmy Award nominee for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for his work on Grey’s Anatomy (in 2009, 2010, and 2011) and Nip/Tuck (2010). He has also worked on tons of well known series and films, including Scream Queens, Dexter, The Revenant, and Fox’s upcoming 911, among others. Most recently, Van Dyke turned Margot Robbie into Tonya Harding for I, Tonya.

Rounding out the team is fx makeup coordinator Stephanie A. Ford, who recently worked on Bright with Nelson.

As previously reported, Nick Castle will once again play Michael Myers in the new film. Stunt performer and actor James Jude Courtney has also been cast to play Myers.

Castle of course played “The Shape” in Carpenter’s 1978 original film. He was the man behind the mask in most of the scenes, though production designer Tommy Lee Wallace (in scenes where Myers is breaking anything), actor Tony Moran (in the unmasking scene), and stuntman Jim Windburn (the fall off the balcony) also helped bring the adult version of the character to life.

Andi Matichak will play Allyson, Laurie Strode’s granddaughter in the new film, with Judy Greer set to play Laurie’s daughter Karen Strode, and of course Jamie Lee Curtis returning to once again reprise her role as Laurie Strode.

Filming will begin in January in Charleston, South Carolina.

Jamie Lee Curtis returns to her iconic role as Laurie Strode, who comes to her final confrontation with Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago.

Master of horror John Carpenter will executive produce and serve as creative consultant on this film, joining forces with cinema’s current leading producer of horror, Jason Blum (Get Out, Split, The Purge, Paranormal Activity). Inspired by Carpenter’s classic, filmmakers David Gordon Green and Danny McBride crafted a story that carves a new path from the events in the landmark 1978 film, and Green also directs.

Halloween will be produced by Malek Akkad, whose Trancas International Films has produced the Halloween series since its inception. Green and McBride will executive produce under their Rough House Pictures banner.

Halloween will be distributed worldwide by Universal Pictures.

As I’m sure you are well aware, 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of John Carpenter’s original 1978 Halloween. It is also worth noting that the film’s release date happens to be Michael Myers’ birthday (in 1957), according to the original franchise canon. Myers would be 61 on Halloween night in 2018.

The new Halloween arrives in theaters on October 19, 2018.
