John Carpenter Honored at Cannes with Golden Coach Award

Legendary director John Carpenter received the honorary Gold Coach Award at the Cannes Film Festival in France yesterday (May 15), recognized is lasting contributions to the world of cinema.

Following a screening of his 1982 masterpiece The Thing, Carpenter received the French Directors’ Guild’s Carrosse d’Or (Golden Coach) Award for creative achievement in filmmaking during the opening ceremony of Director’s Fortnight.

While at Cannes, 71-year-old Carpenter posed for the below photo on the red carpet and also talked to Collider about the possibility of him returning to the director’s chair. Carpenter told the outlet: “I don’t have one (a new film) scheduled but I’m working on things. I made a lot of movies and I got burned out and I had to stop for a while. I have to have a life.

“Circumstance would have to be correct for me to do it again. I’d love to make a little horror film that would be great or a big adventure film. It would be a project that I like that’s budgeted correctly. Nowadays they make these young directors do movie for $2 million when the movie is written for $10 million. So you have to squeeze it all in there and I don’t want to do that any more.”

When asked if he would be interested in directing a TV series, Carpenter replied simply, “I would do one”.
