‘Hocus Pocus’ Sequel Finds Its Director

Disney is reportedly moving forward with a sequel the 1993 family Halloween classic Hocus Pocus for their new streaming service Disney Plus, which has just landed Adam Shankman as its director.

Adam Shankman (Bedtime Stories, Rock of Ages, What Men Want) has signed on to direct the Hocus Pocus sequel, as reported by Variety.

Jen D’Angelo (Workaholics) wrote the script for the sequel.

The original film’s cast includes Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, witches resurrected on Halloween night in Salem, Mass., and though none of them are currently attached to the sequel, you can bet that the studio is hopeful that they will be involved in at least some capacity and the script will reportedly feature them. It is unknown right now if the Sandersons will again be the main characters, or if the sequel will introduce a new group of witches.

Directed by Kenny Ortega from a script by Mick Garris and Neil Cuthbert, based on a story by Garris and David Kirschner, the 1993 original also starred Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, and Doug Jones (The Shape of Water) as Billy Butcherson.

A sequel of sorts has already happened in book form with 2018’s Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel.

We’ll continue to follow this story closely as it develops.
