‘The Batman’ Teaser Unleashed!

With comic cons and other in-person conventions all canceled this summer, Warner Bros. gave fans the ultimate virtual experience with today’s DC FanDome, a massive 24-hour immersive online event covering the entire multiverse, but the biggest moment of the event was undoubtedly the release of the first official teaser for The Batman, which seems to confirm the heavy influence of The Long Halloween comic book story on this big screen iteration of the iconic character.

Last September, Kevin Smith said The Batman would adapt The Long Halloween, and though the movie only completed one-fourth of its filming before being shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic, this first look does in fact feature a note left at a crime scene to Batman in the form of a Halloween greeting card. Writer and director Matt Reeves also stated flat out during his DC FanDome interview that the film will follow Batman has he investigates a string of murders happening in Gotham City during his second year as a crime-fighting vigilante. Jeffrey Wright, who plays James Gordon in the film, also recently posted a photo on Instagram of a copy of The Long Halloween that he was reading in preparation for the role.

The classic 13-issue comic book story The Long Halloween follows a killer named Holiday who murders people on every holiday for a year, from Halloween to the next Halloween, and it also features many of Batman’s iconic villain characters that are confirmed to be appearing in the upcoming film. Of course, even if it adapts the story it will likely be a “loose” adaptation, and may even ignore the whole holiday aspect of it.

In any case, that definitely looks like a Halloween card!

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves, starring Robert Pattinson as Gotham City’s vigilante detective and billionaire Bruce Wayne, along with Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle; Paul Dano as Edward Nashton; Jeffrey Wright as the GCPD’s James Gordon; John Turturro as Carmine Falcone; Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson; Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál; Andy Serkis as Alfred; and Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot.

The Batman is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2021.
