Netflix Acquires New ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ Movie!

After an early teaser poster was released almost a year ago and whispers of a test screening surfaced on social media a few months ago, we have some exciting news tonight regarding the return of Leatherface, as Netflix has picked up Legendary Pictures’ new Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie.

THR reports that Netflix has acquired global rights to the latest Leatherface film, which is reportedly a direct sequel to Tobe Hooper’s original 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and will feature an “old man Leatherface,” picking up in modern day, decades after the events of the first film. It is expected to ignore all sequels and/or prequels.

In this new timeline, Leatherface has not been seen or heard from since the events of the first film.

According to Netflix and Legendary, the film picks up where the original film left off, “bringing the most notorious horror franchise back to life in the same bold and provocative manner that it was first introduced to the world.”

The film, which recently wrapped production back in 2020, is directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker David Blue Garcia (Tejano) and written by Chris Devlin. Fede Alvarez (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) is producing with Bad Hombre’s Rodolfo Sayagues, alongside Kim Henkel (co-writer of the original 1974 film), Ian Henkel and Pat Cassidy, who are producing via their Exurbia Films.

The cast includes Golden Globe nominee Elsie Fisher (Castle Rock), Sarah Yarkin (Happy Death Day 2U), Mark Burnham (Wrong Cops), Moe Dunford (The Dig), Olwen Fouéré (Mandy), Alice Krige (Star Trek), Jacob Latimore (The Maze Runner), Nell Hudson (Victoria), Jessica Allain (The Laundromat), Sam Douglas (Snatch), William Hope (Dark Shadows), and Jolyon Coy (War & Peace).

Mark Burnham (Lowlife) is our new Leatherface (originally played by Gunnar Hansen), and Olwen Fouéré (Mandy) plays another returning legacy character for the 1974 film, playing Sally Hardesty (originally played by Marilyn Burns).

With production completely wrapped, it is possible that Netflix may want to hurry up and get the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre out in time to be a Halloween season event. Could you imagine an October with a new Michael Myers movie, a new Chucky TV series (set on Halloween), a new Scream trailer, and a new Leatherface movie all released in the same month?!

This will be the ninth film in the iconic Chainsaw franchise.

Look for lots more on this as we learn it.
