‘Halloween Kills’ Stabs Record-Breaking $50.35M Opening Weekend
Michael Myers absolutely killed it at the box office this weekend, with a massive $50.35 million three-day opening for Halloween Kills, making it the best opening for any horror film or any R-rated film during the pandemic, which is even more impressive considering that it was competing against Venom, James Bond, and even itself on Peacock.
HK is now tied with Jackass 3D as the ninth-best opening at the domestic box office for October, and the third-best for a horror film during the month, after Halloween 2018 ($76.2M) and 2011’s Paranormal Activity 3 ($52.5M), beating both A Quiet Place 2‘s $47.5M and The Suicide Squad‘s 26.2M openings earlier this year, according to Deadline.
This is obviously great news for Universal, Miramax, and Blumhouse, but it’s also great news for movie theaters, proving that audiences (at least Michael Myers fans) were willing to come out to see the film on the big screen even with it being available “day and date” at the same time on NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock (for paid Premium subscribers).
Everyone involved no doubt is feeling pretty killer on this Michael Myers Monday, as they are about to begin production on next year’s sequel Halloween Ends, which is currently set to start shooting in January.
The official synopsis: And the Halloween night when Michael Myers returned isn’t over yet.
Minutes after Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor.
But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster.
The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all.
Halloween Kills is in theaters and streaming on Peacock now.
