[Interview] Booboo Stewart and Director Robert Rippberger on Their One-Shot Horror Film

The new independent haunted house movie Those Who Walk Away is one wild date in the life of its main character, played by Booboo Stewart, filmed to appear as one continuous shot, playing out in actual real time, so we were thrilled to have the opportunity to talk to director and co-writer Robert Rippberger and his leading man about the challenges of pulling off an epic one-shot, and of course what Halloween means to them.

The film follows Max and Avery on their first date. After meeting on a social media app, their evening takes a perilous turn when they end up at a local haunted house, the home of Rotcreep (played by Booboo’s stun coordinator father Nils Stewart), a sinister creature that rots your body and soul from the inside out with one touch. As the night turns into a deadly game of cat and mouse, Max and Avery begin to realize the trauma they share may either save them or erupt into an unforgettable nightmare.

Filmed in a series of long continuous takes, it is loosely inspired by the Ursula Le Guin short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, using the fly-on-the-wall documentary style to capture the eerie and often bloodcurdling moral predicament of living high while others suffer.

Rippberger’s films have premiered at SXSW and the Palm Springs International Film Festival, winning Best of Fest, as well as at Parliament to Britain’s House of Lords and to senior members of the United Nations, and they have been championed by Angelina Jolie, among others.

Stewart has previously appeared in tentpole blockbusters including The Twilight Saga films and X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as Disney’s massively popular Descendants franchise and, one of our favorites, Tales of Halloween.

Those Who Walk Away will be released in limited U.S. theaters and on VOD this Friday, February 11.
