Blumhouse’s Dracula Movie Canceled Weeks Before Filming Was to Start

Just as one Dracula movie wraps filming, another has been canceled weeks before it was to begin production, as Blumhouse’s take on the immortal Bram Stoker novel that was to be directed by Karyn Kusama is apparently now no longer in development.

Announced back in early 2020, the Blumhouse and Miramax project is now dead, after Miramax is said to have exited over creative differences with the director, killing what would have been a modern day version of the iconic story, according to Deadline. Filming was scheduled to begin in three weeks, and the crew was informed of the cancelation earlier today.

The report also reveals new details that the film would have been titled Mina Harker, and would have starred Blindspotting star Jasmine Cephas Jones as the title character, who meets Dracula (going by the name “Vladimir”) in modern day Los Angeles. Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, The Invitation, Yellowjackets) collaborators Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi wrote the script, based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Just days ago, Universal’s Renfield, the studio’s next revival of Dracula starring Nicolas Cage as the vampire, wrapped filming. It is currently scheduled to bite into theaters on April 14, 2023. Additional Dracula movies on the way soon include Sony’s The Bride (currently in post-production), Andre Overdal’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter for Amblin (currently in post-production), and Chloe Zhao’s Dracula also for Universal.
