Universal’s New Dracula Movie ‘Renfield’ Wraps Filming, Coming 2023

Universal Pictures is bringing Dracula back to movie theaters exactly one year from today, and, right on schedule, principal photography of Renfield has officially wrapped.

Placing the legendary vampire’s longsuffering but loyal servant Renfield at the center of the story for the first time, the new film is directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War), from a script written by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty), based on an original pitch from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. It is reportedly a “modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone.”

The film centers on Renfield (played by Nicholas Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s (Cage) lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (played by Awkwafina).

Nicolas Cage portrays Count Dracula, and Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Bess Rouss also star.

Cage has recently stated that his Dracula’s movements have been inspired by horror films including Ringu and James Wan’s Malignant.

Universal announced via Twitter today (4/14/22) that Renfield has officially wrapped filming, with exactly 365 days to go until it hits the big screen, on April 14, 2023.

This is one of many Dracula movies recently announced and in various stages production, including Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal’s Last Voyage of the DemeterSony’s The BrideBlumhouse’s Dracula, and Eternals director Chloe Zhao’s Dracula also for Universal.
