[Interview] Deborah Ayorinde Talks ‘Them: The Scare’, The ’90s, and Halloween
The slasher-themed second season Prime Video’s horror anthology series, Them: The Scare arrives today, with all eight episodes now streaming, and we talked to the show’s returning lead Deborah Ayorinde recently about playing a new character this season, how easy it was for her to slip back into the 1990s, and her favorite Halloween tradition of people watching.
Them: The Scare is once again set in Los Angeles (the first installment, subtitled Covenant, took place in Compton circa 1952 and also starred Ayorinde), but the new season moves the time period forward to 1991, with the video taped Rodney King beating as the backdrop. Ayorinde plays LAPD Homicide Detective Dawn Reeve, who is assigned to a new case that sends her on the hunt for a serial killer. Navigating a tumultuous time in Los Angeles, with a city on the razor’s edge of chaos, Dawn is determined to stop the killer. But as she draws closer to the truth, something ominous and malevolent grips her and her family.
In addition to Deborah Ayorinde (Riches, Harriet), the cast also includes screen legend Pam Grier (Foxy Brown, Bones, Ghosts of Mars, Escape From L.A., Jackie Brown), Grammy-nominated musician and actor Luke James (The Chi, Insecure), Joshua J. Williams (Cloak & Dagger, Mudbound), Jeremy Bobb (The Continental, God’s Country), Wayne Knight (Seinfeld, Narcos), Carlito Olivero (This Is Me… Now, Escape Room: Tournament of Champions), Charles Brice (Homeland, The Blacklist, Watchmen), and Iman Shumpert (The Chi). The series is a co-production of Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios. Series creator Little Marvin serves as showrunner.
All eight episodes of Them: The Scare are available to stream now on Prime Video. (Watch here!)
