[Interview] Lauren-Marie Taylor Talks ‘In a Violent Nature’, Jason vs. Johnny, and More

The brutal new slasher movie In a Violent Nature is in theaters now, and we recently talked to Lauren-Marie Taylor about her appearance as “The Woman” in the film, returning the horror genre 43 years after starring as Vickie and facing Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th Part 2, and more.

In the film, When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it. The undead golem hones in on the group of vacationing teens responsible for the theft and proceeds to methodically slaughter them one by one in his mission to get it back – along with anyone in his way.

Written and directed by Chris Nash, the film takes the fresh approach of staying with the killer for almost the entire movie rather than following those he is stalking (and killing), making for a unique viewing experience that gives new blood Johnny far more screen time than any other slasher got in their first outings.

On what brought her back to the genre, Taylor tells HDN, “I got the script in an email, from Chris Nash, and as I read through it, I’m reading the role of The Woman and thinking, ‘Wow, that’s a lot of dialogue’. No, seriously. But I was just drawn to this storytelling that she was being given. I thought it was wonderfully written, wonderfully graphic, and the approach was just have her be a cool customer when telling this story. I thought it was a great script.

“I did read it like a typical slasher, with all the sound effects in the back of my brain, so when I actually saw the movie…, I thought, ‘Whoa, this is new’, because there is no music to distract you. It’s just following this villain’s journey. I just thought it was a wonderful read, and I was excited to be a part of it. And drove all the way to Sault Ste. Marie in Canada to be a part of it.”

In our video conversation last week, we also discussed who would win a masked killers fight between Jason and Johnny, what keeps the slasher genre alive and as unkillable as its subjects, and of course we talked Halloween and what it’s like for her when she sees little Jasons out trick or treating in her neighborhood.
