‘Halloween’ Actor Charles Cyphers Has Passed Away

Best known for playing Haddonfield Sheriff Leigh Brackett in the 1978 classic Halloween and two of its sequels, Charles Cyphers has passed away.

Variety reports that Cyphers died from a brief illness in Tucson, Arizona, on Sunday, August 4, his manager Chris Roe announced.

Cyphers reprised his role as Sheriff Brackett in the 1981 sequel Halloween II, and again in 2021’s Halloween Kills.

In addition to his work in the Halloween films, Cyphers also starred in other John Carpenter classics Assault on Precinct 13, The Fog, Elvis, Someone’s Watching Me, and Escape From New York, as well as the 1989 comedy Major League, among dozens of other movie and television show credits.

Cyphers was 85.

UPDATE: John Carpenter has posted on Instagram about Cyphers’ passing, writing, “Charles Cyphers has passed away. He was an early and frequent collaborator with me on my early movies. A kind man, he was a friend. I shall miss him.”

UPDATE: Cyphers’ Halloween Kills co-star James Jude Courtney, who played Michael Myers in the film, has posted on social media, writing, “Very saddened to hear of the passing of our dear cast mate and cinematic legend Charles Cyphers. As fun as it was to work with him, the stories in between were filled with rich tales of a life well lived.”

You can watch Cyphers talk about working with Carpenter and Donald Pleasence on Halloween in the video clip below, from a Q&A panel at the Flashback Weekend horror convention in Chicago, Ill. in 2015.
