[Interview] ‘The Dead Thing’ Director and Cast Talk Dating App Horror and Halloween

As if dating isn’t already scary enough, romance turns to obsession the haunting and erotic new horror movie The Dead Thing, premiering on Shudder this Valentine’s Day, and we recently talked to director and co-writer Elric Kane and the film’s leads Blu Hunt and Ben Smith-Petersen about what drew them to the project, genre influences, and more.

In our video conversation last week, we also discussed their biggest surprises and challenges from this project, and of course what Halloween means to each of them.

In the film, Alex is trapped in a downward spiral of shallow hookups and tepid connections, but she is caught off guard when her dating app swipes lead her into the arms of a mysterious, charming young man Kyle. Despite their passionate night, when the sun rises, the mystery man is nowhere to be found. Alex then sets out to find the one person who made her feel alive. Through her investigation, she reconnects with Kyle, but also digs up a ghastly supernatural secret. The pair quickly descend into a whirlwind of obsession, dependence, lust, and infatuation that has grave consequences.

Directed by Elric Kane (Pure Cinema Podcast, Colors of the Night Podcast), written by Kane and Webb Wilcoxen, the cast is lead by Blu Hunt (The New Mutants, The Originals) as Alex and Ben Smith-Petersen (Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa, The Suicide Squad, Sasquatch Sunset) as Kyle, along with Katherine Hughes, John Karna, Brennan Mejia, Joey Millin, and Aerial Washington.

The Dead Thing begins streaming on Shudder on Valentine’s Day, this Friday, February. 14.
