[Interview] Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk Talk ‘Hell of a Summer’ Slasher’s Mask and More
A new masked killer stalks a summer camp in the horror comedy Hell of a Summer, co-written, co-directed, and co-starring Stranger Things‘ Finn Wolfhard and his Ghostbusters: Afterlife castmate Billy Bryk, and we talked to them recently about the genre tropes they wanted avoid, the all important mask that their slasher wears, and more.
In a video conversation last month, we also took the opportunity to throw out our idea for a possible (Halloween-set) sequel, and Bryk touches on being born on Halloween (that lucky devil).
The film follows 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Hechinger), who arrives at Camp Pineway thinking his biggest problem is that he feels out of touch with his teenage co-workers. What he doesn’t know is that a masked killer is lurking on the campgrounds, brutally picking counselors off one by one.
Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things, It, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and Billy Bryk (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) co-wrote and co-directed the movie, with both actors also leading the cast, along with Fred Hechinger (Fear Street 1994), as well as D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), Abby Quinn (Mad About You), and Pardis Saremi (Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem).
Hell of a Summer hits theaters this Friday, April 4, from Neon (Immaculate, Cuckoo, Longlegs, The Monkey).
