‘Dracula’ is in the Mood for Love [Review]
The latest feature film adaptation of Bram Stoker’s immortal novel, Dracula has just arrived in U.S. theaters, bringing a gorgeously photographed completely lovelorn version of legendary vampire in what is essentially an entertaining remake of a 1992 classic take on the character.
Written and directed by Luc Besson (The Fifth Element, The Professional, Lucy), the film is every bit as lush and colorful as you may expected, making it possibly the brightest lit Dracula movie in recent memory, but it trades terror for a romance in an at times unique, but ultimately reductive reimagining of Francis Ford Coppola’s brilliant and bloody Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
A masterful score by dark maestro Danny Elfman elevating every beautifully composed frame is among the highlights.
The acting is outstanding all around, with Caleb Landry Jones delivering an awesome performance, somehow finding a way to inhabit Dracula fully but without clearly leaning on any previous iteration, making this timeless character his own.
Christoph Waltz is great, as always, in the Van Helsing-like role of a priest, and Zoe Bleu is amazing in the dual roles of Elizabeta and Mina.
While horror fans will likely find themselves still thirsty for more blood after watching this new Dracula, it will make for a fantastic Valentine’s Day (Valloween!) for those longing for a fun gothic romance.
Dracula is in theaters now.
