YouTube Teams With Blumhouse for VR Halloween Haunt

YouTube is teaming up with Blumhouse Productions to launch an innovative new virtual reality (VR) haunt experience for Halloween 2016, inviting viewers to take a terrifying look into “Room 301”.

Bleeding Cool reports that over the next few weeks, YouTube creators like Markiplier, PrankVsPrank, Furious Pete, Vitalyzdtv, and KrazyRayRay, will create original VR videos based around the question: What is your worst fear? Their answers will be shot in Room 301, a set built at YouTube Space LA and additional YouTube Spaces around the world.

“The most frightening places are actually the ones where you feel safe and secure so it will be a lot of fun to experiment with the eerie hotel rooms YouTube built and see what happens when we turn the camera around on their creators,” said Blumhouse’s Jason Blum in a statement.

Using Google’s Jump Cameras, the various creators will offer their nightmare visions via virtual reality videos that can be viewed on the YouTube app and phones using Google Cardboard.

“We wanted to blur the lines between fiction and reality, and increase the fright factor by using virtual reality in this year’s program,” said Chris D’Angelo, YouTube Spaces global director of production and programming.

YouTube Space LA will a host what is being called a “mega collab” video directed by Jesse Wellens from PrankVsPrank that will serve as the origin story for the video series. In the mega collab, creators receive a key to hotel room 301 — also known as YouTube Purgatory — that will inevitably lead them to experience their own worst fears.

The mega collab and other videos will go live on YouTube between October 20 and Halloween, October 31.
