Michael Dougherty To Direct ‘Godzilla: King of Monsters’
While it may not be the news Trick ‘r Treat fans have so anxiously been awaiting, it is GREAT news for the new Godzilla–King Kong “MonsterVerse” that it was officially announced today that none other than Michael Dougherty will direct the upcoming sequel Godzilla: King of Monsters.
Variety reports today that after first being hired to run the Godzilla movie universe writing room, Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus writer/director Michael Dougherty has now been tapped to direct the next installment in the franchise as well.
In October 2015, Legendary and Warner Bros. made a joint announcement that all future King Kong and Godzilla films would be developed by Legendary and distributed by Warner Bros., starting with this year’s Kong: Skull Island.
Though Legendary currently has a distribution deal with Universal Studios, they decided to send the rights back over to Warner Bros. in order to re-team Godzilla and King Kong, and to create a new “ecosystem” of giant super-species, both classic and new, which has now officially been termed the MonsterVerse.
Kong: Skull Island arrives in theaters on March 10, followed by Godzilla: King of Monsters on March 22, 2019, with Godzilla vs. King Kong scheduled to rumble on May 29, 2020.
