Carving Artist Alex Wer is The Pumpkin Geek [Video / Photo Gallery]

The biggest event of its kind in the region, Tidewater Comicon returned to Virginia Beach May 12-13, bringing with it many of the iconic creators, writers, and artists of your favorite comic book heroes and villains, along with actors from various genre films and TV shows, amazing cosplay, and uniquely talented vendors, including The Pumpkin Geek.

Tidewater Comicon 2018 took over the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, VA for two days on Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, and Halloween Daily News was on the scene again this year to bring you full coverage, including photos, videos, and interviews.

Artist Alex Wer, known as The Pumpkin Geek, was among the many vendors at Tidewater Comicon this year, showing off his custom-carved jack-o-lanterns. From California, Wer told us that he has been making these year-round lighted works of art for the last eight years, diving into it full time since August of 2017, and this was his first trip bringing his work to the east coast.

“The pumpkins are artificial, and what I do is I hand carve them with a Dremel,” explained Wer. “Each one takes about four to six hours, and I only do custom orders. So if you are into superheroes or villains, Halloween, whether classic Universal monsters or anything current like Pennywise, that’s what I do, and I ship them worldwide.”

The jack-o-lanterns he had on display in Virginia Beach featured iconic images of the Terminator, Predator, the xenomorph from Alien, Pennywise, Beetlejuice, Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead, Harry Potter, Bilbo from The Hobbit, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman.

“They make great gifts,” said Wer, “and not just for Halloween. I get people that order them for Christmas gifts, for graduation gifts, pretty much anything you can think of. I’ve actually event done wedding proposals. For you guys out there who are going to get married and want to propose in October, it’s a great way to do it. You put your face and your girl’s face on the pumpkin, and on the back I’ll carve, ‘Will you marry me?'”
