‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine’ Goes Out with a Fitting Halloween Farewell

Brooklyn Nine-Nine concluded its epic eight-season run, including its infamous canceling at Fox and resurrection on NBC, with one final, perfect Halloween heist episode, and although it mostly did not take place on October 31, the final scene of the series in fact ended quite fittingly on the best day of the year.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine never disappointed when it came to their annual Halloween episodes, which always featured a wild, fast paced, unpredictable heist game among the show’s main characters, a tradition that started back in Season 1 when Detective Jake Peralta (played by Andy Samberg) bet Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) that he could steal Holt’s prized gold medal. The heists would escalate each year, as all of the principal characters of the police precinct would eventually join in on the fun.

The 2020 heist episode aired in the winter and started with a flashback to Halloween 2019, which the series skipped over during a six-month time jump, kicking off an extended heist that stretched through Valentine’s Day and into Easter. (That year was won – technically three times – by badass Rosa Diaz, played by Stephanie Beatriz.

For the series’ final episode, entitled “The Last Day”, the squad competed in one last heist, not on Halloween, but on the occasion of a number of the characters leaving the precinct for various reasons. The heist itself is one of the best ever, and the winner, (spoiler), is a “noice” surprise.

But in the final scene, it’s Halloween and decorations are visible everywhere, as those characters who had quit the precinct about a year prior all return for one day, for one annual Halloween heist, suggesting that, despite whatever else is going on in their lives, they will continue the fun and games together each year on October 31. It is a perfect series finale episode.

Now we just need the producers and cast to follow through with the concept and actually return with one new Halloween Heist episode each year in October.

Nine-Nine!
