[Interview] Alex Armbruster on Playing John Carver in ‘Thanksgiving’, Hopes for Sequel
It’s always Halloween, but we are celebrating Thanksgiving today… with John Carver! Eli Roth’s 2023 slasher Thanksgiving will undoubtedly be on many of our watchlists again this month, as it will be revisited by horror fans each November for years to come, which we talked about recently with Alex Armbruster, who was behind the mask as the “John Carver” killer, discussing his experiences on set, his hopes for the sequel, and more.
In our video conversation last week, Armbruster told HDN that when he was hired to be Patrick Dempsey’s stunt double, he figured it may be some light stand-in work and possibly some stunts, but when he arrived on set the first day, they dressed him in a pilgrim hat and John Carver mask and had film film the diner kill scene in its entirety.
He would go on to play the killer in all of the death scenes, sharing time behind the mask with Dempsey on two scenes and with another stunt actor in one chase scene. Armbruster was even photographed in the Carver costume for the promotional photos that were used for the official theatrical poster.
We dive deep into the filming of each of the gory kills, and also discuss Alex’s hopes for the sequel (dated for November 2025), as well as the fact that this film will be consumed by horror fans annually with their turkey and stuffing likely for decades to come.
Alex also previewed his involvement in Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein (coming to Netflix in 2025) and The Black Phone 2, and of course we talked about Halloween, and much more.
