James Gunn’s ‘Creature Commandos’ will Begin New DCU with Monster Action

The new DC cinematic universe (officially termed the DCU) begins with legendary monsters teaming up with tragic outcasts from the comic books in writer and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn’s adult animated series Creature Commandos, streaming on Max starting in December.

The show tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they’re your last, worst option.

The seven-episode Max Original adult animated series is written and executive produced by James Gunn (The Suicide Squad, 2025’s Superman), based on DC characters and produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Additional executive producers include Peter Safran (Gunn’s DC Studios co-CEO), Dean Lorey, and Sam Register, with Rick Morales serving as a supervising producer.

The voice cast, who will go on to play these characters in any other media (i.e. films or video games) where they are featured moving forward in Gunn’s DCU, includes Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour (Stranger Things, Hellboy) as Frankenstein’s Monster (known here as Eric Frankenstein), Indira Varma as The Bride, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.

This show marks the first title kicking off the new DC universe of interconnected feature films, series, both animated and live action projects, video games, and any other media outside of the traditional comic books, which will now be known simply as the DCU.

Creature Commandos premieres on December 5, streaming exclusively on Max.
