[Interview] Sandy King Talks John Carpenter’s ‘Cathedral’ Graphic Novel, and Halloween

John Carpenter‘s Cathedral graphic novel and companion soundtrack album are out now, and we talked to the project’s iconic co-writer and producer Sandy King recently about the story’s origins in a dream, why heavy metal is the only music choice for a demon tale, and more.

In our fun video conversation earlier this month, we also of course discussed Halloween and what it means to King on a personal level, what certain trick or treaters dressed as Michael Myers may find in their treat bags, and the big heart of horror fans.

Available now from Storm King Productions, Cathedral is John Carpenter’s highly anticipated first original graphic novel, co-written with acclaimed producer and editor Sandy King and writer Sean Sobczak, illustrated by renowned artists Federico De Luca and Luis Guaragna, colored by Ryan Winn, and lettered by Marshall Dillon. Notably, De Luca handles the artwork for the first parts of the graphic novel, while Guaragna takes over when the action enters the Underworld.

The middle of downtown Los Angeles sets the scene for John Carpenter’s Cathedral where an abandoned cathedral stands, fenced in and ignored by the world around it. The preoccupied passers-by have long since ceased to notice the dilapidated church in their midst, never mind sensing the danger and centuries old evil trapped inside its walls.

A gruesome murder one late night pulls the structure into the spotlight, triggering a police investigation into the loss of one of their own. Lieutenant Christine Marks, along with detectives Paul Hernandez and Steve Mayfield, must enter the church in search of the monster that murdered her father. Every step takes them deeper into the belly of the church revealing the mystery of an ancient evil imprisoned within.

The graphic novel is accompanied by the album Cathedral., which Carpenter has described as his “first heavy metal album”.

Cathedral is out now, with the graphic novel available online and in stores, and the album is available online and streaming.
