‘Halloween’ Franchise Leaving Weinstein’s Dimension Films!
Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Miramax is “starting over” with producer Malek Akkad and shopping the Halloween franchise in search of a new distributor to replace Dimension.
Owned by The Weinstein Company, Dimension Films has been behind the Halloween movie franchise for the last 20 years, starting with Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers in 1995, and continuing with Halloween H20: 20 Years Later in 1998, Halloween: Resurrection in 2002, and on through Rob Zombie’s 2007 remake and its 2009 sequel.
While this is certainly exciting news, the big question now is what will happen to Halloween Returns, which was officially announced last summer and was expected to be released in 2016, though production has been delayed. Most recently Akkad confirmed studio troubles had resulted in the new film’s delays, so maybe this pending “divorce” from Dimension could be what is needed in order to get Michael Myers back on the big screen.
UPDATE: The Wrap has now confirmed that Dimension has lost the Halloween franchise, however, their article further states that writer/director Marcus Dunstan and co-writer Patrick Melton are “no longer involved, as Miramax wanted a clean break from Dimension and the incarnation of the project that had been in development there”, in reference to Halloween Returns.
