[Interview] ‘The Parenting’ Writer and Director Talk RomCom Horror
The new horror comedy The Parenting premieres on Max this month, featuring an all star cast stuck in a haunted house with a demon, and we talked to director Craig Johnson and writer Kent Sublette recently about why romcom horror mashups are trending at the moment, if they have ever experienced anything supernatural in their own lives, and more.
During a virtual roundtable with our journalists last week, we of course also asked what Halloween means to Johnson and Sublette.
The Max Original film follows young couple Rohan and Josh as they plan a perfect weekend getaway in the country to introduce their parents. As tensions begin to flare between the more traditional Sharon and Frank and the laid-back Liddy and Cliff, the families soon realize that their rental – managed by eccentric local Brenda – is haunted by the presence of a 400-year-old poltergeist. When one parent becomes thoroughly possessed, it’s up to the young couple and their meddlesome BFF Sara to unite the families and stop the evil entity once and for all.
Starring Nik Dodani, Brandon Flynn, Brian Cox (Trick ‘r Treat), Edie Falco, Lisa Kudrow, Dean Norris (Breaking Bad, Under the Dome), Parker Posey, and Vivian Bang, the movie is directed by Craig Johnson and written by Kent Sublette.
The Parenting premieres on Max on March 13.
