The first official trailer for the sequel Godzilla: King of Monsters, directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus). has just stomped its way online after debuting at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC).
Starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel, The Conjuring), Dougherty also co-wrote this return of Godzilla to the big screen with Zach Shields, his Krampus co-writer.
King of the Monsters is both a sequel to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla and the followup to 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, as the third film in Legendary’s Godzilla-King Kong “MonsterVerse”, described as an ecosystem of giant super-species, both classic and new.
The new film will also feature three (at least) iconic monsters from the classic Toho Godzilla movies, with Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah all teased in the post-credits scene of Skull Island.
The official synopsis: Following the global success of Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse, an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters roars into theaters on Mary 31, 2019, with Godzilla vs. Kong scheduled to rumble on May 29, 2020.
