Christina Ricci Joins Tim Burton’s Addams Family Netflix Series ‘Wednesday’

A new live action Addams Family is coming to Netflix in the upcoming Tim Burton-directed series Wednesday, and today brings exciting news that Christina Ricci, who memorably played the role of Wednesday Addams in two live action Addams Family movies in the 1990s, has officially joined the cast as series regular, playing a brand new character.

Deadline reports that Ricci will be “a major part of the live-action show” in a mystery role confirmed to be “a new character and not an older version of Wednesday.”

It is also reported that Ricci’s “newly conceived character succeeded the character played by Thora Birch, which remains in the show following Birch’s exit amid production. Ricci has been quietly working on Wednesday for weeks; filming on the MGM-produced series is slated to wrap in Romania at the end of the month.”

First announced back in February of 2021, Wednesday is described as “a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy.” It’s said to follow “Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago — all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships”.

It sounds like this new iteration of the iconic Addams Family will fill the hole in Netflix’s programming recently vacated by Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and there is honestly no one I would rather see directing this than Burton.

Leading the cast as Wednesday Addams, Jenna Ortega previously starred in Scream (2022) and Ti West’s X, with Catherine Zeta-Jones stepping into the iconic silhouette of Morticia Addams, while Luis Guzmán brings to life the debonair Gomez Addams in the upcoming TV series Wednesday.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Smallville) are writing and serving as showrunners.

The series will be directed by Tim Burton (Batman, Batman Returns, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow).
