[Interview] Zoe De Grand’Maison Talks Horror Western ‘Organ Trail’, Halloween, and More
The bloody new western Organ Trail graphically depicts the horrors of the American “old west” circa 1870, as the lone survivor of a massacred family, played brilliantly by Zoe De Grand’Maison, hunts down the band of killers who took everything from her in order to save a beloved horse, and De Grand’Maison told us that the brutality depicted in the film was matched only by the beauty of the on-location shoot in Montana, during a recent video interview.
“Well, it was cold,” Zoe said, speaking to us via Zoom last week. “If you see us shivering, that’s not fake. Anytime you see our breath, that’s real too. It was pretty chilly. Our wardrobe was surprisingly warm, it was like heavy wool, but then you’d have things like exposed ears or thin little gloves and boots on, so yeah, your extremities suffered, that’s for sure. I don’t know if I’ve ever consumed so much hot tea and coffee in my life. You’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do to stay warm. It wasn’t as windy as it appears to be in the movie, but the rest of it was very real. It was very cold.”
After appearing in recurring roles on major series like Orphan Black and Riverdale, Organ Trail is De Grand’Maison’s first starring role in a feature film, and her award-worthy performance assures that it will not be her last.
“She is this incredibly strong and resilient and brave young woman,” Zoe told us about her character Abigail in Organ Trail. “I don’t know that I’ve ever had the chance to play such a heroine, so I definitely was excited to sink my teeth into it.”
On the subject of Halloween itself, De Grand’Maison shared fond memories of celebrating the holiday growing up in Canada. “Oh my gosh, Halloween is like the best day of the year,” she said. “It’s so fun. For some reason, as a child I really liked dressing up as men for Halloween. I was like Charlie Chaplin and Albert Einstein and Sweeny Todd and The Joker. I don’t know. It was my jam. I had so much fun.”Â
We also discussed more about Halloween, including her favorite Halloween candy and costume, and how Organ Trail is a bit like an old west version of John Wick in our conversation.
Organ Trail will be available to buy on Digital this Friday, May 12. (Click here to watch on Amazon Prime Video.)
