[Interview] Director Lorcan Finnegan Talks ‘The Surfer’ and Halloween in Ireland

The wild psychological thriller The Surfer rides a wave into theaters today, and we recently talked to the film’s director Lorcan Finnegan about driving Nicolas Cage to madness, what excited him most about the project, and more.

In a fun video conversation earlier this week, we also of course talked about celebrating Halloween growing up in Finnegan’s native Ireland, and what the holiday means to him.

In the film, a man returns to the idyllic beach of his childhood to surf with his son. But his desire to hit the waves is thwarted by a group of locals whose mantra is “don’t live here, don’t surf here.” Humiliated and angry, the man is drawn into a conflict that keeps rising in concert with the punishing heat of the summer and pushes him to his breaking point.

Directed by Lorcan Finnegan and written by Thomas Martin, Nicolas Cage (Longlegs, Renfield) stars, along with Julian McMahon, Nic Cassim, Miranda Tapsell, Alexander Bertrand, and Justin Rosniak.

The Surfer hits theaters today, May 2.

You can watch our full video interview with Lorcan Finnegan, as well as the film’s official trailer, below, premiering at 7:31 p.m. EST.
